Self isolating can be a blessing, even though right now it might feel like a curse.

As I sit here typing this, we’ve been mandated to stay in our homes for the next 30 days (at least, I have a feeling it’s going to be much longer). There is panic all over social media and people are buying up food as if the world is coming to an end. If you go outside, it’s like a ghost town. The people who ARE out won’t look you in the eye and are keeping their distance.

There’s no time for pleasantries and everyone seems to be out for themselves. Smiles are becoming rare and I’ve watched people lose their shit over a loaf of bread. All because of a virus we don’t understand but have created a ton of fear around that has people subscribing to two extremes – I don’t care or bunker status.

But now we don’t have a choice. We’re ordered to stay inside and only leave for essential things. Many of us are now unemployed and frankly, scared. How are we going to support ourselves? How long is this going to be? Will someone I love get sick and die? What does the future hold.

I don’t have any answers for you and I’m not going to speculate what the future may hold or spread any more fear then we are already seeing on our social media devices.

What I am going to say is that isolation can be a good thing if you can manage to look at it from a glass half full mentality. It can be a good thing to be forced to sit with yourself. Here’s why….

Slow the fuck down. Here in LA we have a tendency to sprint through our lives always so busy trying to do everything at once. We even date in multiples! We try to GO to everything and DO everything and BE everything. It’s fucking exhausting. This quarantine is forcing us to slow the fuck down and just breathe. So do it. Just slow down, take your time and breathe.

True Self reflection. Don’t feed me that bullshit about “I’m being single so I can work on myself.” Most people say that when they just don’t want to date YOU or they have zero prospects. There’s no excuses now. You are stuck with you right now. Take a look at your life. What are you doing with it? Are there changes you’d like to make? Or are you proud of everything you’ve accomplished to this point and this is merely a speed bump along the way? Self reflect honestly and openly with yourself. There is no better time than now.

Bond & Connect. We get so busy sometimes we forget to check in on one another. I used to have A LOT of friends. I don’t really so much anymore and I can’t blame them. I have to point the finger at myself. I didn’t continue the friendships. Now it’s time to reach out to people. Check on them. Listen as much as you talk. Human connection is a powerful thing. It’s why therapy helps, it’s why AA helps, it’s why support groups help! We need humans to bond with and connect to…or else we bond to things that will not benefit us – our cell phones, televisions, drugs, alcohol, pornography…..while not all people will become addicts, it’s a breeding ground for disaster.

Reignite a passion. Maybe you let some of your hobbies and passions fall by the wayside. I know I have. Pick them back up, if you can. Or discover something new!

Reconnect with yourself. Often times we neglect ourselves. You may not even notice it. Perhaps you slowly started eating poorly, started skipping your skincare routine or simply stopped doing some of the things that make you happy because life got in the way. Right now, you’re forced to look at yourself in the mirror. Cease the day! Have a look and rediscover the incredible human that you are. Only seeing negative things? Work through that. Dive into yourself, question and explore. No better time than now.

Just simply exist. There’s nothing wrong with just simply existing. There is no pressure here. You can just be. You don’t have to be super productive or conquer the world right now. Maybe it’s just time for you to take a break and just simply exist. Everyone is trying to jam ideas down your throat about how to live right now, maybe you just need to ignore it and just be. There’s no shame in that.

But most importantly, take a deep breath and let it out slowly. Do that a couple times and be present in your body and in this moment. There is nothing you can do to change whats going on around you. There are no amount of posts, memes or cuddles that’s going to make everything okay again. Only time. What you CAN control though is how you respond to everything that is happening around you.

If you can somehow find peace and some happiness in this garbage dump of a situation, you’re going to be better off. Even if it’s just being grateful for being healthy – there is something to be happy about and grateful for.

This too shall pass, but for now, we shall stay in doors and weather the storm. Take care of yourself, check in on those you care about and most of all, try to keep yourself healthy and safe.
